Following a successful trip to Austin for SXSW, Plaster will be making their way to England in May for The Great Escape. The Canadian electro-rock group will be performing for the first time at the UK festival, which features over 350 emerging artist playing at over 30 venues over a four day span. Among the group’s performances, they will be sharing the stage with fellow Canadian artist Elisapie on Thursday, 5/16.

SiriusXM introduced MySXM this week, a new feature that allows the user to personalize existing SiriusXM stations. The interactive internet radio service works with sliding bars that create variations the characteristics of existing playlists, such as the era of the music and the popularity of the music in the playlist. SiriusXM’s newest feature will start with 50 playlist but will expand over time.
For those who thought Psy was a one-hit wonder, think again. The Korean pop internet sensation broke Youtube records this week with his new single and video for “Gentleman”. The video surpassed 70 million views in three days and an incredible 18.9 million views in the first 24 hours of its release, breaking the record held by Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj’s video for “Beauty and the Beat” (which had 10.6 million views in its first 24 hours).
Spotify expanded its service to five new countries this week. The popular on-demand music streaming service launched in Mexico, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Baltics, and Iceland this Tuesday. The service, which has 6 million subscribers, will compete with Rdio in Mexico and Iceland and Sony Music Unlimited in Mexico.
Football fans who have waited all day for Sunday night will not have Faith Hill to serenade them starting next season. The country singer decided to leave Sunday Night Football, where she sung the opening theme to NBC’s primetime game. Her anthem, a reworked version of Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself For Loving You” opened the program since 2007. No replacement has been named.

Pop rock group Paramore’s self-titled album dethroned Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience, which spend three weeks at the top but fell to number three this week with 98,000 unit sold. MTV, VH1, and CMT are offering “artist hubs” as a way to connect artist with fans and provide additional opportunities for musicians with partners and brands. The hubs have the ability to create awareness for the artist across Viacomm properties, offering opportunities like submitting music for placement in 1,200 hours of weekly music video programming. The hubs are an extension of the MTV, VH1, and CMT artist pages, which launched last year.

Def Jam Records and Phat Farm clothing founder Russell Simmons is entering the digital marketing world. The founder of the pioneer hip hop label will launch Narrative, a new digital marketing, entertainment, and technology company with Tricia Clarke-Stone, his long-time business partner. According to the company, Narrative will provide solutions for publishers, brands, and agencies, including the creation of social media campaigns.
Kid Rock is attempting a unique new strategy for his upcoming amphitheater tour with the Twisted Brown Trucker Band. The rocker will take a pay cut by structuring a deal that sets ticket prices at $20 across the board for each show. Kid Rock is also working with Live Nation to make his shows more affordable by lowering the prices on everything from beer to parking in every city of the tour, which begins June 28, and will release 1,000 tickets directly through Platinum Tickets via Ticketmaster at market value to try to combat scalpers.
Independent label Wind-Up Records signed a deal this week Clear Channel Radio this week that will result in the two companies to share digital and broadcast revenue. Clear Channel has signed similar deals in the past with labels like Big Machine Label Group and Glassnote Entertainment Group. Wind-Up Records features a diverse roster, including Creed, O.A.R., and Evanescence.
Last year, Target and producer Emilio Estefan teamed up to launch “Emilio Estefan’s Picks”, a Latin-themed entertainment section in Target stores with movies, music, and TV curated by Estefan. Target and Estefan are extending their relationship, including a partnership with Monster Headphones to launch the new Estefan-branded Sound Machine headphones. The program will also be added to 50 additional Target stores, including Miami and Los Angeles locations.
Budweiser’s second annual Made in America Festival will feature Beyonce and Nine Inch Nails as the main headliners. Curated by Jay-Z, the festival will run over Labor Day weekend in Philadelphia and will feature a diverse line-up that includes Calvin Harris, Imagine Dragons, Wiz Khalifa, Queens of the Stone Age, The Gaslight Anthem, and Kendrick Lamar. Last year’s inaugural event drew nearly 80,000 people.

The San Francisco-based music start-up, which tracks the most popular songs across social media and the internet, has been working on developing the app for twitter. As a result, We Are Hunted will shut down its website but will continue working as part of the twitter team. The app could launch as early as the Coachella Festival.
